01 / The purpose

In-depth language care.
From draft to final proof.

The Manuscript Refinement Suite is a comprehensive editorial service for long-form academic works that need more than a final proofread. It is suitable for master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, academic books and other substantial scholarly manuscripts, with the level of editing determined by the writing’s needs rather than the author’s qualification.

I begin with a full academic copyedit, refining sentences for clarity, flow, precision, concision, grammar and academic register while preserving your voice, argument and disciplinary conventions. The work extends across the manuscript, so terminology, abbreviations, headings, references and presentation remain consistent from beginning to end.

Reference and citation checking and document formatting are integrated into the process. Once you have reviewed the edit and made your own revisions, the manuscript receives a separate final proofreading pass to identify residual errors and issues introduced during revision.

For examined dissertations, the agreed service also includes one defined post-examination proofread of reasonable examiner-requested textual corrections. For academic books and other works without a formal examination stage, the editing stages are adapted to the relevant submission or publication requirements.

02 / The editorial journey

A considered process.
Across two editorial passes.

Ten integrated editorial and technical stages across four coordinated phases. The in-depth copyedit and subsequent proofread are separated by time for your author revisions; examined dissertations may also receive a defined post-examination proof.

I.

Assess & establish

  1. 01Review the manuscript, intended destination, English variant, reference style and relevant university or publisher guidance
  2. 02Assess the structure, language requirements, formatting complexity and recurring editorial concerns

Editorial decisions grounded in the manuscript’s needs.

II.

Copyedit & refine

  1. 03Edit sentence by sentence for clarity, flow, grammar, syntax, concision and scholarly register
  2. 04Harmonise terminology, abbreviations and conventions; maintain a bespoke style sheet

The language becomes clearer without replacing your voice.

III.

Check & prepare

  1. 05Review citation–reference correspondence, completeness and the agreed referencing style
  2. 06Check tables, figures, captions, internal references and numbering
  3. 07Review front matter, heading hierarchy, contents and document structure
  4. 08Apply the supplied institutional or publisher manuscript-formatting requirements

The details made consistent throughout the work.

IV.

Revisions & proof

  1. 09After you review and revise the copyedit, complete a separate final proofreading and quality-control pass
  2. 10Deliver final agreed files and certificate; for examined dissertations, later proofread defined examiner-requested textual corrections

A defined conclusion to each editorial stage.

03 / The full editorial scope

Deeper refinement.
Carefully coordinated.

Copyediting, reference checking and formatting work together in one editorial plan, followed by a defined final proof. Where relevant, an additional limited examination-stage review completes the service.

09 / 12

Post-examination proofreading

For examined dissertations: one defined proofread of reasonable textual corrections following examiner feedback.

10 / 12

University or publisher requirements

Preparation against the supplied institutional or publisher manuscript guidelines, as appropriate to the work.

11 / 12

Style sheet & editorial report

A recorded set of decisions, recurring observations and outstanding actions for the author.

Language revision certificate

A certificate accurately describing the professional language revision performed, included in the suite.

This suite is intended for manuscripts ready for language refinement, not substantive co-authorship, research design or major argument reconstruction. Extensive new content or large-scale restructuring after editing is quoted separately. If your manuscript is already in excellent condition and chiefly needs a final check, consider The Manuscript Preparation Suite. For book-specific editorial development and publication preparation, see The Scholarly Publication Suite.

05 / A related specialist suite

Multiple articles?
One editorial thread.

A separate service for article-based doctoral research.

When research articles are drafted and published over several years, editorial decisions can accumulate across different manuscripts and journal requirements. The Research Continuity Suite provides staged support for individual articles and the final integrative dissertation, supported by a continually updated Research Continuity Register.

It is a distinct specialist service, not an automatic component of the Manuscript Refinement Suite. Researchers who only need editing of a completed dissertation can choose this suite without committing to ongoing article-by-article support.

For multi-publication editorial support from the early stages of a doctorate, explore the dedicated continuity service.

Individually
quoted.
One agreed quotation. Defined editorial stages.
Your quotation covers the agreed copyediting, reference review, formatting and final post-revision proof. For examined dissertations, a limited post-examination proof is scheduled separately and included where agreed.
The manuscript and its conditionWord count, language-editing intensity, references, tables, figures and formatting complexity inform your quotation.
More than one editorial readingA comprehensive copyedit is followed by your author revisions and a separate final proofread.
Destination and deadlineUniversity examination, academic submission or book-manuscript requirements shape the deliverables and schedule.

Your fixed quotation defines the editorial stages, manuscript version and word count covered, delivery timetable, and any post-examination proofreading allowance. New chapters, substantial rewrites or other work outside the agreed scope will require a separate quotation. Long-term multi-article support is available through the Research Continuity Suite.

07 / Common questions

The details
worth knowing.

From the first full copyedit to the later proof, here is how the suite works for different kinds of academic manuscripts.

Who is the Manuscript Refinement Suite for?

It is designed for master’s theses, doctoral dissertations, academic books and other long-form scholarly manuscripts that need a detailed copyedit as well as reference checking, formatting and final proofreading.

The decision is based on the manuscript’s current condition and required editorial intervention, not the academic level of its author.

How is this different from the Manuscript Preparation Suite?

The Manuscript Preparation Suite provides final-stage proofreading, reference checking and formatting for a manuscript already close to its finished standard.

The Refinement Suite begins with full copyediting for clarity, flow and academic expression. It also includes a separate final proof after author revisions, with a defined post-examination proofreading stage for examined dissertations where appropriate.

When should I book the Refinement Suite?

Book when the research, main argument and overall organisation are substantially established, but the language would benefit from deeper refinement before submission or publication.

There should be time to review the copyedit, resolve queries and make your own revisions before the final proofreading stage.

What exactly does the final proofreading stage cover?

After you have reviewed the full copyedit and completed your revisions, I proofread the resulting manuscript for residual language errors, unintended inconsistencies, formatting issues and errors introduced during revision.

This is a distinct, defined pass, not an unlimited cycle of new copyediting.

Does it include post-examination proofreading?

For dissertations that undergo formal examination, one limited post-examination proofread of reasonable examiner-requested textual corrections can be included in the agreed service and schedule.

The scope is confirmed in your quotation. Substantial new research, extensive rewriting or added chapters are not covered automatically and would require a separate agreement. Manuscripts without an examination stage do not receive an unrelated examination service.

Can I use this suite for an academic book?

Yes. Academic books and long-form scholarly manuscripts can benefit from comprehensive language refinement even when they are not doctoral dissertations.

Publisher-specific editorial development, book production and typesetting may be more appropriately handled through The Scholarly Publication Suite. I will recommend the service that matches your actual requirements.

What if my dissertation is article-based?

If you have a completed article-based dissertation and need the editable synthesis and dissertation-level material refined, this suite may be appropriate. The scope will respect the status of published articles and your institution’s requirements.

For editing across individual article manuscripts over several years, with an evolving editorial record, see the separate Research Continuity Suite.

Do you check references, citations and formatting?

Yes. The package includes checks of the agreed citation and referencing style, correspondence between citations and bibliography, formatting consistency and technical document presentation.

I flag missing or unverifiable bibliographic information rather than inventing details. Please send relevant university, departmental or publisher guidelines when requesting a quote.

Will you change my research or scholarly argument?

No. I improve the expression and presentation of your work while preserving your analysis, conclusions and authorial voice. Questions requiring disciplinary judgement remain yours to resolve.

Major restructuring or substantive developmental assistance is not part of this language-focused package.

Do you work in UK and US English, including with multilingual researchers?

Yes. I work with researchers who use English as a first or additional language, and edit in UK or US English according to your institutional, journal or publisher requirements.

The proposed scope reflects how much language intervention the manuscript actually needs.

Can you invoice my university or research organisation?

Institutional invoicing can be arranged where the required billing details and purchase procedures are provided in advance. Please let me know about any procurement requirements when requesting your quotation.

What will the quote include?

You will receive a fixed quotation specifying the agreed word count, copyediting scope, citation/reference and formatting work, proofreading stages, deliverables and schedule.

Where post-examination proofreading applies, the allowance and arrangements for submitting corrections will be stated clearly rather than left open-ended.

THE RESEARCH IS YOURS.

From substantial research
to a refined manuscript.

When you have spent months or years inside a substantial academic work, familiar phrasing and recurring details can become difficult to evaluate with fresh eyes. My role is to bring that independent editorial perspective to the language and presentation of your manuscript.

Your scholarship remains yours. The copyedit clarifies how it is expressed, the accompanying checks support consistency, and the final proof provides a considered review after your own revisions.
