Language is magic.We use it every day.

Language has carried a quiet, transformative magic for me for as long as I can remember. Ever since I learned to read, I’ve been fascinated by what happens beneath the words themselves: an unfamiliar idea becomes understandable, a single sentence shifts the way we see something, or a story makes us feel an emotion we weren't expecting.

Fiction reveals that power openly. Entire worlds are built from nothing but ink. We worry for people who have never existed, laugh with them, and mourn them. Symbols on a page evoke genuine human empathy. If that isn't magic, what is?

Academic writing has a different kind of enchantment: the intellectual kind. Research is often complex, specialised and messy. But when ideas are expressed with precision, they become something another person can understand, question, evaluate and build upon. Clear language doesn't merely record knowledge; it moves knowledge.

Somewhere along the way, I realised that editing was the craft that focused this power. It could help a thought arrive exactly as intended, or bring a story's emotional truth into sharper view. That belief is the heart of Gray Matter Edits, which I founded in 2025, and the reason its fiction branch lives inside The Writer's Spellbook.

Originally from England, I now call Sauvo, Finland, home. I have a BA (Hons) in English Literature and Creative Writing from The Open University, and I work with writers and researchers around the world. My days move between the precision of academic manuscripts and the limitless possibilities of fiction. They may appear to be different crafts, but both begin with the same question: what are these words trying to do, and how can I help them do it?

Beyond the manuscripts: I share my home with my wife and our four cats, Minnie, Groot, Godzilla and Rascal. Between us, there are always books, multilingual conversations about English and Finnish, and at least one cat convinced that the warmest laptop belongs to them.
