01 / The purpose

A complete scholarly work.
Considered as a book.

The Scholarly Publication Suite is a bespoke, multi-stage editorial service for academic books, research monographs and other substantial scholarly publications. It combines an initial book-level editorial assessment with detailed language refinement and careful preparation for the book’s intended publication route.

We begin with the manuscript as a whole: the progression of its central argument, the purpose of each chapter, the consistency of terminology and the experience of its intended reader. You receive a written assessment with practical, author-led recommendations before the full copyedit begins.

Once your revisions are complete, I copyedit for clarity, flow, concision, academic register and consistency, while checking citations, references, internal cross-references and other scholarly apparatus. The editorial work is guided by an evolving style sheet and the relevant publisher’s requirements where available.

Publication preparation is matched to the destination. For a traditionally published book, that may mean preparing a manuscript to a publisher’s specifications. For an independently published scholarly book, professional interior typesetting and proofing of the final layout may be included in the agreed scope.

03 / The full editorial scope

The scholarly detail.
And the book as a whole.

Every part of the service is designed around an academic book: its overall organisation, the precision of its prose, the integrity of its references and the technical requirements of its publication route.

Scope boundaries: Editorial assessment is not disciplinary peer review or research verification. Permissions clearance, indexing, cover design, ISBN registration, marketing and publisher approval are not included unless expressly agreed with an appropriate provider. Typesetting is conditional, not automatic. If you only need a copyedit rather than a multi-stage publication service, explore The Manuscript Refinement Suite.

Prepared for the next stage.

You receive clear, author-centred documentation as well as the edited manuscript. Final production files depend on whether your book is being prepared for a publisher or independent publication.

02.

Tracked manuscript

Comprehensive copyediting in Word Track Changes, including editorial queries requiring your judgement.

03.

06.

Publication-preparation pack

05 / The signature editorial feature

The book-level assessment.
Beyond sentence-level editing.

Before polishing the prose, understand how the manuscript works as a complete book.

Individual chapters may be meticulously researched and beautifully written without yet forming a cohesive reading experience. The first stage examines how each chapter contributes to the book’s larger scholarly purpose and how its ideas move from one section to the next.

The resulting Scholarly Book Assessment Report identifies editorial priorities, areas of unnecessary repetition, terminology that requires harmonisation, and passages where readers may need clearer transitions or context.

This is a review of scholarly communication and organisation, not a substitute for disciplinary peer review. Decisions about research interpretation and substantial revision remain with you.

The full copyedit begins after the agreed author-revision stage, so you are not paying to polish text that may subsequently be rewritten.

What the assessment examines

Three perspectives.
One coherent book.

Every recommendation serves the manuscript’s scholarly purpose and intended readership.

I

Argument & progression

Whether the book’s central contribution is introduced, sustained and developed in a clear sequence, with purposeful chapter transitions.

II

Continuity & repetition

Whether terminology, explanations and recurring concepts remain consistent, and where material may repeat without adding value.

III

Reader & publication context

Whether framing, signposting and scholarly apparatus support the intended audience and the available publisher requirements.

06 / Publication pathways

Different destinations.
Equally considered preparation.

01 / ACADEMIC PRESS OR PUBLISHER

Traditional scholarly publication

Editorial assessment, author revisions, comprehensive copyediting and scholarly reference checking are tailored to the publisher’s manuscript instructions.

Final preparation focuses on the required submission or handover files, including appropriate front matter, references and internal consistency.

The publisher may control typesetting and production proofing. Independent interior design is not automatically included or necessary. A final proofreading stage is scheduled where the author can supply an agreed manuscript or proof version.

02 / AUTHOR-LED SCHOLARLY PUBLICATION

Independent academic publishing

The same book-level assessment and detailed editorial refinement are followed by publication-specific preparation agreed with the author.

Where required and quoted, I can typeset the interior of a scholarly book, prepare the agreed print-layout files and review the resulting page proofs.

Production requirements are established before the work begins. Ebook conversion, print-on-demand setup, indexing and cover design are separate matters unless explicitly included in your quotation.

Already under contract? Please share your publisher’s author instructions before commissioning work. If your book only needs language editing, the Manuscript Refinement Suite may be the more economical choice.

07 / Bespoke quotation

A book-sized undertaking.
A clearly defined commission.

The Scholarly Publication Suite
Individually
quoted.
A staged, fixed-price editorial plan
Your quotation identifies the assessment, author-revision period, copyediting, references, preparation route and final proof. Typesetting is included only when expressly specified.
Manuscript and research apparatusLength, condition, referencing system, notes, bibliography, figures, tables and structural complexity inform the quote.
Assessment before refinementThe quotation separates the initial book-level assessment from copyediting, with a defined opportunity for author revisions.
Publishing route and schedulePublisher specifications, typesetting needs, final proof format and manuscript or production deadlines are agreed in advance.

Each scholarly book is quoted individually. No publication outcome is guaranteed. Additional revisions beyond the agreed stages, specialised permissions work or new production formats require a separate scope and quotation.

08 / Common questions

Before the book
moves forward.

The right editorial plan depends on the manuscript, its publishing route and how far it has progressed. These answers explain what the suite includes and what remains with the author or publisher.

Who is the Scholarly Publication Suite for?

It is designed for research monographs, academic books, book-length scholarly nonfiction and substantially revised dissertation-to-book manuscripts.

The suite is most useful when the manuscript would benefit from a whole-book editorial assessment before detailed copyediting and publication preparation. You do not need a publishing contract to enquire.

What is the book-level editorial assessment?

It is a full-manuscript review of argument presentation, chapter progression, transitions, repetition, terminology and readability for the intended scholarly audience.

You receive a written assessment to guide your revisions. It is not disciplinary peer review, fact-checking of the underlying research or authorship of new scholarly content.

Will you rewrite my research or develop new arguments?

No. I focus on the coherence and communication of the work you have written. Where a scholarly point needs clarification, I raise a query or recommend that you revisit it.

Research conclusions, conceptual decisions, substantive rewriting and all final authorial choices remain yours.

Does the suite include professional typesetting?

Where appropriate, yes, but only when included in your quotation. For independently published academic books, I can prepare a professionally typeset interior and proof the agreed layout.

For traditionally published books, the publisher may undertake typesetting and production proofreading. In those cases, I focus on publisher-compliant manuscript preparation rather than charging you for duplicate production work.

Can you prepare a manuscript for a university press?

Yes, I can work to the author or manuscript-preparation instructions you provide, including conventions for headings, citations, references, tables, figures and manuscript files.

I cannot guarantee acceptance or override your publisher’s production workflow. Please check any existing contract to avoid commissioning editing your publisher is already providing.

Do you work with books adapted from doctoral dissertations?

Yes, provided the manuscript is sufficiently developed for this editorial service. The assessment can identify where dissertation conventions, repeated explanations or chapter transitions may need author-led revision for a book readership.

It does not include ghostwriting, disciplinary review or an extensive rewrite of the dissertation into a new book. Major structural development would require a distinct agreement.

How are references, footnotes and bibliographies handled?

I check consistency, citation–reference correspondence and adherence to the agreed referencing conventions, including footnotes or endnotes where applicable.

Unknown or unverifiable source details are flagged for the author; I do not invent bibliographic information or undertake new literature research.

Do you clear image permissions or prepare an index?

Not as standard. Copyright permissions, third-party image licences, indexing, cover design, ISBN registration and publisher or print-platform account setup are separate tasks.

I can identify materials or references that appear to require author follow-up and list them on the publication-preparation checklist, without presenting that as legal clearance.

When does final proofreading happen?

The timing is agreed in the editorial plan. It may be a final read of the author-approved manuscript, or a check of typeset page proofs where that stage is available.

It is a defined round, not unlimited proofreading of repeated rewrites or new proofs. The final format depends on your publisher or production route.

What if I only need copyediting for my academic book?

You may not need the full Publication Suite. The Manuscript Refinement Suite covers comprehensive language editing, references, formatting and defined final proofing for long-form manuscripts.

For a manuscript requiring only finishing corrections, consider The Manuscript Preparation Suite.

What if I am still writing an article-based dissertation?

For coordinated editorial support across journal articles and the final dissertation, explore The Research Continuity Suite.

The Scholarly Publication Suite is specifically designed for a book-length publication project rather than multi-year support across individual research articles.

Can you invoice my university, and how is the work priced?

Institutional invoicing can be arranged when the relevant procurement details are provided in advance.

After reviewing the manuscript and its publication requirements, I will prepare a bespoke fixed quotation identifying the included stages, files, deadlines, typesetting arrangements if relevant, and any excluded services.

THE SCHOLARSHIP IS YOURS.

From a lifetime of enquiry
to a considered scholarly book.

A scholarly book is more than the sum of its chapters. Its argument must remain intelligible across a long reading journey, while its terminology, citations and presentation support the confidence of its readers.

I bring an independent editorial perspective to that whole. You remain the scholar and author. My role is to help your manuscript communicate the contribution you have already made, and to prepare it carefully for the publication route you choose.

Scholarly books, carefully prepared
